Each year the Alternative Concours is held to pay tribute to those MGs that have seen better days - cherished by their owners as
daily workhorses but probably could use a touch up here and
there. This year is no exception and the event was held on
Sunday 27 May at the Ma Liu Shui Marine Police HQ.
The day had a
promising start - the sun was shining and it looked like the bad
spell of weather which had plagued us throughout the week had come
to an end. Colin and Calvin turned up at the venue to set up
everything (prizes, sharpening pencils, the barbeque stove etc.).
Our fearless leader then decided to return to the car park to direct
the masses expected for the event. Meanwhile, Calvin, being
new to the Club, decided to stay out of the way by remaining in the
air-conditioned mess to provide the much needed quality assurance on
the refrigerator (or rather, its content). Colin must have
stood in the sun for about an hour before the participants started
rolling in.
Eventually three other MGs turned up - Simon Clennell (MGB
Roadster), K.B. Chan (MGB GT), and Angus Chan (MG Midget).
Together with the judges and family members the crowd came to about
18 people, who kicked off the proceedings with a barbecue lunch,
after which the judges, Don, Meyer Ennio Wong and Gary Parker, went
down to start judging the entries.

Shortly after the judging was concluded, the sun decided to take
a break and the sky opened up, and remained so for the several hours
after that, which was fine as it gave the group a much needed excuse
to stay for longer to consume soft drinks.
As 3 of the 4 entries were in near-perfect conditions, the judges
had a tough job in ensuring an equitable distribution of prizes, but
eventually came up with the following roll of dishonour!
Worst
car of the Show/overall winner: Simon Clennell, MGB Roadster
Worst bodywork: Angus Chan, Midget
Worst chrome/brightwork: K.B.Chan, MGB GT
Worst wheels & tires: K.B. Chan. MGB GT
Worst engine Bay: Simon Clennell, MGB Roadster, we had to give this
one to him!!!
Most unnecessary extras: K.B. Chan MGB GT for AirCon
Most unusual Item: Simon Clennell for a Balaclava (which he
claimed was for karting, but we suspect BANK ROBBERY)!
The car that should not be there: K.B. Chan, MGB GT
Thanks and gifts were presented to the judges: Gary Parker, Ennio
Wong and Don Meyer. A special gift was presented to Calvin,
who, after his MG broke down that morning en route, still turned up
to support the Club, although whinging incessantly throughout the
day about his MGB's overheating! Last but not the least, a word
of thanks must go to Supt. Frederick Siu, President of the Mess,
without whose help this event would not have been possible.
